Analysis of New Ideas for Website Optimization

Baidu search algorithm is constantly upgrading, it is time to say goodbye to some bad SEO habits.

These are all SEO tactics that simply don't work, or even worse, penalize the site.

Below is a list of the top nine habits that need to be curbed.

1. Create pages with similar content

Fortunately, this tactic isn't as common as it used to be, but the problem crops up quite often even today.

Pages with similar content (often created solely for the purpose of targeting keywords) is not a good strategy.

For example, duplicating a city page within a website with a unique city name could be harmful.

Essentially, what you end up with are low-quality pages that can pull down the rest of your site.

2. Use generic, templated emails for link building

We don't like receiving spam, why send spam?

Link building has become more than just an SEO strategy, it has become a marketing strategy. This means we must identify and research the audience before creating a "marketing" message.

Sending a generic, templated message to someone requesting a link isn't going to get you stellar results.

Instead, send fewer emails and spend time researching that person's website and finding out what their users or customers are interested in.

Also, don't use generic salutations such as "Dear Webmaster" or "Dear Site Owner." Please use the person's first name.

3. Try to fix every ranking problem by getting more links

Yes, links still matter today, but they are only one of many factors in the ranking algorithm.

Links are public recognition and reflect that the site has valuable information.

Where problems arise, however, is when links are gathered in unnatural ways, such as through link schemes, bad link directories, buying links, and other spamming tactics.

As the new year begins, ditch these aggressive link-building techniques and instead focus on a more marketing- and user-focused link strategy. Check out SEJ's guide to link building for tips that can carry you into 2020.

4. Add marginal content for SEO purposes

You cannot have SEO without content.

SEO and content are intertwined.

You need content to optimize for search.

If you don't optimize your content, searchers won't find you.

So there's no question we need content, but there's still a problem.

Fringe content is often added to a website only for the purpose of "improving SEO".

However, it is not enough to have any content.

Avoid wasting tons of content just to increase the number of pages on your site. Google is always promoting high-quality content, even if search engines are not promoting it, we still need to pay attention to users.

Your content must be perceived as high quality, especially compared to your competitors.

5. Skip basic on-page optimization elements

For years, people have speculated about the correlation between title tags and rankings.

No matter where you stand on the topic, a good headline can convert a searcher into a visitor (and, if you're lucky, even a customer).

Take the time to optimize your titles with keywords, but also make sure they are engaging.

When using this tag, please optimize the title tag, because we know that people will scan the page after clicking on it in search results.

An optimized title shows visitors that your page solves their query.

6. Not addressing (or identifying) harmful technical issues

After conducting countless technical SEO audits, I can tell you with confidence that most websites have some sort of issue that hurts their search performance.

Adding content and attracting links is great.

However, if there are underlying technical issues with your site, rankings could still be negatively affected.

*Common technical issues include:

Incorrect redirection (e.g. redirect chain, 302 instead of 301, redirect not used, etc.).

Page load times are slow.

Move error.

Duplicate content.

Accidentally blocked pages.

7. Not optimizing images on your website

One of the often overlooked SEO opportunities has to do with images.

As SEO professionals, we need to take every opportunity to appear in search results, including optimizing for image search.

When adding an image to your website, don't forget the image's filename and alt attribute.

Instead of an image filename containing XYZ123.jpg, consider using keywords that describe the image, such as organic-coffee-beans.jpg.

As for the alt attribute, it should not be keyword stuffed but should describe the image.

If the image fits with the theme of the page (and it should be), then it's only natural to use keywords in the description.

8. Giving Poor Quality Reports

I've heard many business owners and marketing directors complain about the past experiences of SEO experts.

The most common problem mentioned is not understanding the work done and/or the results. Since so much of what we do in SEO is invisible, it's crucial to establish as much transparency as possible.

Instead of making SEO sound like some crazy 'magic', outline your work as part of your monthly reports to clients or supervisors.

Provide data on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to your SEO efforts and measure, measure, measure.

This is how you retain clients, and even your job.

9. Not Keeping Up With SEO Best Practices

SEO is a moving target.
